OIL companies have raised petrol prices - just days after higher GST pushed pump rates up.

The latest increase, of two cents a litre, has sent petrol prices to record levels.

The costliest petrol - Shell's V-Power - is now $2.027 a litre before discount.

The last time petrol was this costly was in August 2005, when Hurricane Katrina disrupted US oil production and sent crude oil prices past US$70 a barrel.

Crude oil is now trading at similar levels.

At the pumps, the cheapest, 92-octane grade, is $1.683 a litre.

Prices of 98 and 95-octane fuels are $1.79 and $1.716 a litre respectively.
